Miss Lonely Hearts – Lost Highway (2016)

Over the last 5 years, Miss Lonely Hearts has been playing extensively and developing their own original versions of many outstanding and inspiring old (country) songs. The boys felt is was high time to record these for everyone’s listening pleasure. Lost Highway includes 10 songs by great artists like Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Lefty Frizzell and Merle Travis. Miss Lonely Hearts also puts their original spin on “The River” by Bruce Springsteen and “Breaking the Law” by Judas Priest.

It’s a misnomer to say that the boys in Miss Lonely Hearts (from Santa Cruz, CA) have a finger on the pulse of the Nor Cal country music scene, rather, they’ve been its lifeblood since the release of their sophomore effort, “Crying Bottle Blues” in 2012.  With their hard California driving honky tonk sound, MLH has packed bar rooms and dance halls all up and down the west coast, and opened for nationally touring acts like The Devil Makes Three, Eileen Jewel, Brothers Comatose, Wayne Hancock.

In 2014 the band recorded their third studio album under the guidance of Lee Jeffries, the veteran Bay Area producer and legendary lap steel guitarist. The record establishes frontman Wyatt Hesemeyer as a writer worthy of naming  George Jones and Townes Van Zandt among his influences.  The infectious rhythms supplied by drummer Patrick O’Connor and bassist Mischa Gasch are complimented by an ensemble cast of lead players, including guitarist Sean Carscadden, fiddle player Josh Rabie (Water Tower Boys), and country hall of fame inductee Patti Maxine.

“Listen to the record, it’s clear that these guys have something special going on. It’s a perfect blend of Tennessee Three rhythm and sweet country crooning that’s just a little rough around the edges. But maybe missing from the recordings, is the fact that these guys are one of the best live party bands I’ve heard in ages. Big German cowboy beating the shit out of the upright bass? Check. Mutant honky tonk guitar and suitcase drums? Check. A dead ringer for a young Bruce Springsteen with the pipes of Charley Feathers? You bet. Will they drink you out of house and home, dance with every lady in the house, and wear nothing but snow pants while they do it? You just never know what might happen when these guys come to town…”
-Cooper McBean (The Devil Makes Three)
