Jon Chi

Marin County based songwriter Jon Chi began playing piano in small-town Massachusetts at a young age.  After traveling west to Stanford University Chi began focusing on guitar and writing songs and picked up lap steel.

A stint at the Berklee College of Music followed, after which Jon spent the next decade honing the crafts of songwriting and record production in an analog studio beneath the California redwoods.  During this time, Jon wrote for and toured with his band Rainmaker. Chi also collaborated in the studio with musicians including Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, guitar greats Erenest Ranglin and Robben Ford, Dave Schools (Widespread Panic) and songwriting talents Jolie Holland, James Mercer of the Shins, and the Jayhawks.  These diverse artists had varying influences on Jon. Above all Chi learned that no recording technique could substitute for an honest song and an honest performance.

Jon’s songs have received major and college radio play, and have appeared in documentaries, commercials, and on NPR’s All Things Considered.  Chi’s recent release – the self-produced Just for Now – explores themes of mortality, struggle and redemption all set to his spacious take on Americana.
